NGC 7000 - North America Nebula
From Sky and Telescope: The North America Nebula (NGC 7000 or Caldwell 20) is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus, close to Deneb. The North America Nebula is large, covering an area of more than four times the size of the full moon; but its surface brightness is low, so normally it cannot be seen with the unaided eye. The North America Nebula and the nearby Pelican Nebula (IC 5070) are parts of the same interstellar cloud of ionized hydrogen. Between the Earth and the nebula complex lies a band of interstellar dust that absorbs the light of stars and nebulae behind it, and thereby determines the shape as we see it.
More recent analysis places the nebula around 2600 light years distant, 140 light years across and the North America section at 90 light years north-south.
Imagers Notes: Presented here in two color mapping palettes, your typical Hubble SHO and a more dynamic palette from user ForaxX, blending the SHO filters for a more red/teal effect. Either way, I spent 12 hours of imaging on each of the filters (Ha, Sii, and Oiii) for a full 36 hours of total integration time. It totally pays off in the level of detail in the gas and dust. Very little editing or other manipulation was required once the channels were integrated.
